Ice Memory Foundation’s Post

Last Monday, we were very honoured to be invited at Maison Française of the Embassy of France in the United States with France Science as to share all the issues at stake in the #IceMemory initiative. Moderated by Christina Ruffini of CBS News, in front of a great audience that showed a deep interest in all the challenges that lie ahead, we were able to present the scientific, diplomatic and financial issues at stake to constitute the Ice Cores Heritage. Anne-Catherine Ohlmann, Director of Ice Memory Foundation and Jérôme Chappellaz, EPFL Professor and Chair of Ice Memory Foundation discussed the various facets of the initiative and answered the many questions from an attentive audience. Our American colleague Dominic Winski from the University of Maine was able to highlight his research and the situation of the Eclipse Ice Field glacier in the St Elias mountains. [Scientific publication in Nature] 🎥 Watch our latest video about the new results recently published in Nature Geoscience Magazine. Those very concerning results show that glacier melting destroys important environmental data archive. For some of glaciers in the world, it's already too late.  This study led by Margit Schwikowski - PSI Paul Scherrer Institut and based on ice cores collected in 2018 and 2020 in the #Alps - #GrandCombin glacier in collaboration with Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - shows how urgent is the ice memory salvage.  “It's a race against time. [NASA features Ice Memory drillings] NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Earth Observatory just published an article about the research Margit Schwikowski #IceMemory scientific lead wrote for Nature Scientific Reports on Geoscience last month about glacier melting erasing environmental archives. Images by 🌎Wanmei Liang using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) were made to put in evidence the critical state of the melting. 🏔 [Himalaya news] "Intensifying cross-border cooperation is necessary to effectively preserve the common heritage of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region as indicated by the Call to Action published by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development" - ICIMOD "Comparing the period from 2000 to 2009 with the period from 2010 to 2019, their mass loss has increased by 65 %. Global warming between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius will cause glaciers in the HKH to lose 30 to 50 % of their volume by 2100" Ice Memory Foundation supports an effective monitoring, evaluation and learning system and its call to action as to preserve ice memory of the #ThirdPole, a critically endangered region hosting glaciers melting very quickly. Preserving the #IceMemory of this region would appear on the upcoming drillings roadmap. The authors of this strategy underline that transboundary cooperation in the Hindu Kush Himalaya is crucial because the focus of intergovernmental initiatives has been on political and economic interests at the regional scale but they highlight the social and environmental well-being issue as well.
