International Mobilisation: New partnerships in Asia to preserve ice memory

November 2023

Our work with the Chinese scientific community is growing. At the latest International Symposium on the Third Pole Environment (ISTPE) held in Chongqing, Jérôme Chappellaz, Chairman of Ice Memory Foundation presented Ice Memory and its recent progress.

The symposium presented academic works on the Tibetan Plateau also called the Third Pole and their relevance to society, with the aim of advancing current understanding of the Third Pole environment to support the early adaptation of the region to climate change. But also to identify cutting-edge issues related to environmental change and develop plans for the future.

We were delighted to contribute to this important scientific event in China, bringing together several participants from abroad, including Pr. Tom Battin from École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, who specializes in the biophysical chemistry of rivers downstream from glaciers.

Thanks to Pr. Yao Tandong, Chairman of the session and Director of the Institute for Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITPR), and disciple of Pr. Qin Dahe. Pr. Qin Dahe himself who was vice-president of Working Group I of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and nowadays member of our Ice Memory Board.

Thanks also to Pr. Shichang Kang for the images.
