Preserve data today for the science of tomorrow

Ice cores are unique scientific archives, preserving detailed records of past climate and environment.

For each drilling mission, a reference core is analyzed by the scientific teams in their laboratories, generating high-quality fundamental science that already contributes to advancing climate knowledge and informing science-based decision-making.

Ice Memory itself is not a research program; its role is to preserve endangered ice cores and ensure their long-term preservation. The data produced by these contemporary studies feed the Ice Memory Database, an open-access resource that complements the Ice Memory Sanctuary in Antarctica and ensures that both the ice and its scientific value remain accessible for generations to come.

What is the Ice Memory Database?

The Ice Memory Database will be an organised, open-access repository that will bring together scientific data from Ice Memory ice cores.
It aims to:
  • Centralize reference datasets
  • Ensure open and  accessible data  for future generations
  • Serve as reference for future sampling

A global scientific legacy

The Ice Memory Database complements the Ice Memory Sanctuary, thereby the preservation and accessibility of both the physical ice cores and the data associated with them.
